Focal plane model for flat refractive geometry

چکیده
Background: Flow visualization techniques such as uPIV and droplet imaging determine the measurement volume by the focal plane. Thus, an understanding of how the focal plane moves in reference to the camera is necessary when planar interfaces are present between the camera and the focal plane. Methods: Using geometric optics, a focus model for a camera imaging through multiple parallel interfaces with different refractive indices is derived. This model is based on the thin lens camera model and gives the location of the focal plane, the depth of field, and the change in the location of the focal plane for a change of camera position. The theoretical model is validated by both simulation and experimental results. Results: Significant results are that while the magnification of a camera for an in-focus object does not vary for changes in the camera position, the position of the focal plane does. The change of the focal plane location depends only on the refractive indices of the media surrounding the camera and the focal plane regardless of the number or type of other media in between. Conclusion: The derived model provides a simple, accurate relationship between the focal plane location and the number and location of planar interfaces, thus avoiding potentially incorrect results for measurement plane depth.

Studying Focusing Properties of Graded Index Photonic Crystals Made of Material with Different Refractive Index
In this paper we investigate focusing properties of graded index (GRIN) photonic crystal (PC) structures which are composed of different materials with different refractive indices. GRIN PC structure is constructed from air holes in dielectric background. The holes radii are varied in the normal direction to the propagation in such a way that a parabolic effective refractive index is produced. ...
متن کاملAdjustable hybrid diffractive/refractive achromatic lens
We demonstrate a variable focal length achromatic lens that consists of a flat liquid crystal diffractive lens and a pressure-controlled fluidic refractive lens. The diffractive lens is composed of a flat binary Fresnel zone structure and a thin liquid crystal layer, producing high efficiency and millisecond switching times while applying a low ac voltage input. The focusing power of the diffra...

This paper deals with the basic notions of k-tautimmersions . These notions come from two special cases; that is, tight and taut immersions. Tight and taut based on high and distance functions respectively and their basic notions are normal bundle, endpoint map, focal point, critical normal. We generalize hight and distance functions to cylindrical function and define basic notions of k-taut ...

This paper is aimed at presenting a new virtual camera model which can ef!ciently model refraction through "at housings in underwater photography. The key idea is to employ a pixel-wise virtual focal length concept to encode the refractive projection inside the "at housing. The radiallysymmetric structure of the varifocal length around the normal of the housing surface allows us to encode the r...

The dynamic instability regions of composite laminated skew flat plates subjected to uniform in-plane axial end-loading are investigated. The in-plane loading is assumed as a combination of a time-invariant component and a harmonic time-varying component uniformly distributed along two opposite panel ends’ width. In case of some loading frequency-amplitude pair-conditions, the model is subjecte...
